Spa & Wellness in Mauritius

Whether it's the main reason for a holiday or simply a relaxing way to pass an hour or two, Mauritius' array of world-class spas fit the bill

The fact that Mauritius can now support a resort that is dedicated to wellness speaks
volumes for the progress that the spa, health and wellbeing movement has achieved in the travel industry.

But all resorts are now well tuned in to the spa phenomenon, developing a range of treatments that have drawn inspiration from local remedies as well as regimes from throughout the world.

Asian Ayurvedic massages and ocean-inspired treatments might be mixed with age-old African and Creole remedies made from local herbs and flowers, or courses in eastern meditation linked to beauty and health preparations from international names such as Clarins, Givenchy, Guerlain, La Prairie and Shiseido.

The result is that Mauritian resorts have gained recognition on the world stage for their style, choice of treatments and effectiveness.

The Givenchy Spa at the One&Only Le Saint Geran and Le Touessrok were both voted into the top ten Africa, Middle East and Indian Ocean spas by readers of Conde Nast Traveller, while the Sanctuary at The Residence has been voted as one of the top spas in the world by Cosmopolitan France and Vogue Germany.

Mauritius Spa resorts have been very good for a long time, and they are constantly changing and reinventing themselves, offering new thinking and traditional treatments.

The setting of spa facilities in Mauritian resorts are , both exceptional and inspired.

The Grand Mauritian has launched its 1,500 square metre Mandara Spa offering a range of treatments inspired by Mauritian beauty and health traditions combined with Indonesian, Thai, Indian and Hawaiian influences.

The Royal Palm, a resort of the Beachcomber group which is linked to CIarins spa and beauty treatments, has installed a larger facility that uses the spa pool as the central focus. All indoor and outdoor treatment rooms and pavilions are linked with water and lush tropical planting.

Shanti Ananda Maurice offers 61 suites and villas on its south coast site, but its 70,000 sq ft spa with 25 treatment rooms set in tropical gardens forms its heart. Guests have a huge choice of treatments and therapies and are assessed for an optimum diet during their stay.

The Six Senses Spa at Le Telfair, for example, nestles in tropical gardens with ponds and water features that soothe, calm and balance the senses.

La Source Spa at Shandrani stretches an impressive 1,600 metres and includes 11 treatment rooms which are split into two wings. The first wing focuses on traditional treatments and features saunas, hammans and relaxation rooms opening on to a reflecting pooL The second wing is styled to exude a Zen atmosphere with treatment rooms designed around a spacious wooden deck.

The Source at Legends has Eternity, a double massage room reserved for couples, with its own private garden and shower, while at the centre of the spa there is a small garden with a salt¬water pool and two whirlpools.

The Spa at the Oberoi is another to employ traditional treatments using local oils and fruits. How about a coconut husk body brush and deep freshly ground coconut massage?

A holistic approach is taken at the One & Only Le Saint Geran spa, with yoga and tai chi offered. Health and fitness packages include analysis, personal training sessions, aqua and swimming training and spa treatments.

The scope of beauty, relaxation and wellness treatments in Mauritius is as wide as the style of spas, and that amounts to a virtual guarantee of satisfaction. If you can't find what you're looking for in Mauritius, it probably doesn't exist.

A lavish spa is now de rigeur for any self-respecting resort in Mauritius and holidaymakers have lots to choose from, offering every treatment imaginable
