Luxury Cuisine & Dining in Mauritius

From traditional Mauritius cuisine, you will discover an eclectic mix of Creole, Indian and Chinese food with hotel restaurants also catering for  the more European tastes.
But whatever your taste, you will find the cooking on Mauritius to be in a class of its own, and whether you dine in your hotel or sample the local restaurants, your taste buds will be in for a real treat!

Shopping in Mauritius

Mauritius has built a great reputation as a shoppers paradise, with excellent shopping opportunities and very reasonable prices.

If you want to include some serious shopping in your holiday to Mauritius, the island has a strong reputation for textiles, with sweaters, polo shirts and other knitwear proving popular purchases. Leading luxury brands, both originals and, it should be said, copies are sold at unbeatable prices all over Mauritius.

Curepipe is the main centre for tourist shopping with Port Louis well worth a visit. A speciality of Curepipe is the selection of models of boats and old sailing ships, often beautifully made by the many excellent local craftsmen, all competing for attention.

Bargaining, except possibly in the markets, is neither usual nor encouraged and is unlikely to succeed, as most items are fairly priced.

Climate in Mauritius

Mauritius Weather and Rainfall Chart

Mauritius is the perfect all year holiday destination, warm throughout the year with a subtropical climate and only two, very similar seasons.

The Summer season runs from November to April, with temperatures reaching as high as 34ºC (93ºF) on the coast.

December to April sees the highest levels of humidity, but the climate is never unbearable, particularly on the coast, thanks to a constant sea breeze.

Cyclones, with strong winds and heavy rain, can occur between January and March and Mauritius will normally experience about three or four cyclones a year during this period, each usually lasting a couple of days.

During winter the temperature drops a few degrees, with cooler evenings, but there is still plenty of sunshine and it is a very pleasant time of year to take your holiday to Mauritius.

Sea temperatures vary between 24ºC (75ºF) in the winter and 28ºC (82ºF) in the summer.

The peak holiday season runs from October to Easter, with hotel prices dropping during the summer months.

Getting Around in Mauritius

The island is a place of stunning natural beauty and you will really make the most of your holiday to Mauritius by getting out and about to take in all the island has to offer.
There are three ways to get around:

Available outside most hotels or by booking at your hotel reception, taxis are the most popular way to get around Mauritius  Rates may differ between drivers, so it pays to ask at reception how much they consider the journey to cost and then negotiate with the driver.

Mauritius has an excellent bus service with cheap tickets and an extensive (but slow) network which will take you just about anywhere on the island
The main hubs for bus travel are Curepipe and Port Louis.

Car Hire
Driving is on the left. There over 1,600 km of roads of varying standard all over Mauritius, providing a fabulous range of often stunningly scenic drives.
There are several rental car companies and your travel agent will happily advise you.
A great way to see the island is to hire a taxi and driver for the day. Most drivers know the island very well, and if they don’t know something, they will know someone who does.
